Religious Education

Curriculum Intent

The Religious Education Curriculum at St. Joseph’s is built upon three key pillars and all members of the department strive to embed these across their lessons:

  • Spiritual development – All students will have the opportunity to grow spiritually along their own faith journeys regardless of their starting points or backgrounds.
  • Engagement – We want Religious Education to inspire, captive and enthuse students to want to study and encounter both the Catholic and other faith traditions in wider-society.
  • Academic formation – We want our students to grow academically in their understanding, discernment and response to key religious issues and topics.

These three pillars are the hallmarks of Religious Education at St. Joseph’s.

Following the new RED (2023) in KS3 and EDUQAS Route B at GCSE and EDEXCEL Religious Studies at A-Level we focus upon three key strands of study in terms of our academic formation:

  • Understanding – We want students to develop deep theological knowledge of beliefs and how these beliefs impact religious life.
  • Discern – We want students to be able to reflect theologically, ethically and philosophically about these beliefs in action.
  • Respond – We want students to be able to transfer religious teachings and live them out in modern life through things like Social Action, Empathy, Compassion, respect for others and Stewardship.
