Modern Foreign Languages (MFL)

“If you talk to a man in a language that he understands, that goes to his head. If you talk to him in his own language, that goes to his heart.”

Curriculum Intent

The MFL department aims to equip students with a strong understanding of phonics, vocabulary, and grammar, enabling them to use language effectively across diverse themes.

We focus on developing listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills, fostering an appreciation of how these areas are interconnected. Our pedagogy is research-led and practice-informed, prioritizing high-quality lessons that support all students’ attainment, regardless of ability.

We further cultural capital by helping students communicate in other languages and understand global cultural differences. The curriculum encourages students to express opinions on social issues, promoting tolerance and respect for others.

By ensuring confident language learners, we lay the groundwork for further study in languages, highlighting the career and enrichment opportunities for students proficient in another language in an increasingly interconnected world.

Our central aims:

  • Understand and respond to spoken and written language from a variety of authentic sources.
  • Speak with increasing confidence, fluency and spontaneity, finding ways of communicating what they want to say, including through discussion and asking questions, and continually improving the accuracy of their pronunciation and intonation.
  • Students can write at varying length, for different purposes and audiences, using a variety of grammatical structures and tenses.
  • Understand, appreciate and discuss cultural differences.
