Oracy and Transcription

At St. Joseph’s, we recognise the vital role that oracy and transcription play in a student's overall development. We are committed to embedding these skills across all subjects, as they are essential for effective communication, critical thinking, and academic success.

By prioritising oracy, we encourage students to articulate their ideas confidently and thoughtfully, while transcription skills support their ability to organise and express their learning clearly. Together, these skills empower students to engage meaningfully with the curriculum, collaborate with others, and thrive both inside and outside the classroom. We run a debate club and a series of book clubs as well as hosting the Trust’s ‘spelling bee’ wherein each of our secondaries compete.

All reading interventions include elements of oracy and transcription: after students have mastered the phonetic code, it is crucial that they read aloud and engage in echo, choral and reciprocal reading to secure reading fluency. Equally as important is transcription and each intervention incorporates time to develop letter formation and handwriting skills.
