Mr. Mather and the Law Department were delighted to welcome former St Joseph’s students, Mick Laffey and Amelia Patrick from Burnett’s Solicitors, into school.
Mick is a partner at Burnett’s in the Catastrophic Injury section of the firm and Amelia is currently training to be a solicitor and hoping to qualify in September. Amelia also studied Law at St Joseph’s and was taught by Mr. Mather from 2015-2019.
Mick first explained their roles in their firm and the type of issues and laws that they deal with on a day-to-day basis. He went on to explain the difference between a solicitor and a barrister before talking more widely about the types of law Burnett’s cover.
Amelia talked about her route to where she is today and what it is like to be a young female working in a legal environment, telling us that law is much more inclusive and diverse than it has been in the past.
Mick and Amelia both expressed the importance of studying hard during A Levels and getting the best grades you can as well as strongly stating that anyone can get into law if they show the correct desire to succeed, no matter their background.
Mr. Mather is extremely proud of Amelia and all she continues to achieve and we are all very grateful to both Mick and Amelia for coming into school. We look forward to working together again in the future.
